There is much talk these days about polite political discourse in light of the deadly shootings in Tuscon. Some ask: did all the Tea Party rhetoric inspire 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner to shoot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords because he disagreed with her stance on immigration? I’m not certain, but the immigration debate does inspire hurtful and even scary words and actions. Here’s a story I wrote about a Santa Clarita councilman (Daily News, Jan. 2010), who called himself a proud racist because he was against illegal immigration. I was the first to interview him.
